22-year-old Canadian Ruby West was born to be an athlete—seriously, her dad was an Olympic swimmer!—but rather than dive into the pool, Ruby fell in love with cycling at a young age. Her career started in cyclocross, with three Pan-American and three National Championship titles, and recently, she’s added track racing to the mix while still managing to squeak out a second place finish in her first cyclocross Elite Women’s Pan-American Championships. With a schedule that’s packed with World Cups and World Championships on the track and the ‘cross course, she’s still making time for rest and recovery, and a few hot laps with her family’s latest farm addition, a donkey named Gracie.

Rapid fire round:

Weirdest bike riding experience:
Riding around our farm here for training, I end up bobbing and weaving in between the cows, and now, a very angry donkey who likes to chase me, so I’ve been really into donkey intervals lately. I definitely have raced her a few times, unintentionally! It’s a fight or flight thing, if you’re ever seen a donkey kick. It’s great for training, and so far I’ve won every race against her, but it’s only a matter of time.

Top 3 desert island staples:
Simba, my cat. And my boyfriend Derek, because that would not go well for our relationship if I left him behind. We could forage for most of our food… but I think I’d want cheese. Maybe I should say my bike, but I’ll say cheese. If I'm on a desert island, that's not a great place to ride a bike. I'll be fine, I'll get back to my swimming routes.

“Ride up” song:
Boss B*tch by Doja Cat.

Bike she’s loving:
Factor LS lightweight gravel racing bike (with Challenge Grifo tires on Black Inc wheels and a Shimano drivetrain set up for cyclocross racing).
